How do people read tarot cards? I visited a high priestess witch to find out!
A Real Life Witch
I recently traveled to East Texas to meet the high priestess of a witch coven. I had met Gayle while working on my friend Sommer’s documentary about the Ouija Board and I promised her that if I ever ended up visiting East Texas again I would come to see her. When I called her up she suggested that she could give me a tarot card reading. I thought this was a great way to learn more about her, her pagan religion, and dispel some myths about witches. This was my first tarot card reading so I was really excited to experience a reading for myself. However, I wanted to stay neutral so I wouldn’t affect the reading itself. I wanted to be a blank slate so I could evaluate the accurateness of the reading.
Tarot Cards Explained
My previous preconceptions of tarot cards is that they were an extra sensory perception tool used by fortunetellers. I couldn’t help but think of the tarot card booth at the local carnival. I wasn’t quite sure if as a witch Gayle had developed extra sensory skills or if they were totally unrelated. What I came to realize is that Gayle is an energy worker. Her religion and way of life are focused on bringing positive energy into her world. As a result Gayle is many things and she doesn’t fit into one box or one label. There was nothing psychic about her use of tarot cards. They were simply a tool for her to start conversations based on the topic that each card relates to. It’s like going to see a therapist where you draw cards to decide what you will talk about. The more I got to know Gayle I got the sense that she would be a great person to share your fears, hopes, and dreams with. She has a good perspective on the world and she is a great person to get advice from. I left her home with a whole new appreciate for her and what tarot cards really are.
Big thanks to Gayle for being so sweet and letting me hang out in her home! If you want to learn more about how to read tarot cards or to get a tarot card reading go to http://www.gayletracey-mull.com.
